Holistic Wellness 101

Looking at health holistically means looking at the whole person. While diet and nutrition are foundational components of health, other factors also contribute to health and well-being. All of the kale in the world will not compensate for high levels of stress and anxiety.

Looking at Health of the Whole Person

Often when we think of health?, the first thing we usually think of is diet and nutrition. This is a key component and the building block of health. After all, we are what we eat. But are we really? Humans are complex, our relationship with food is complex, are relationship with each other is complex.

Often, health is compartmentalized to treat an ailment or a symptom without looking at the person as a whole. We fix the thing that is broken, without looking at what broke it in the first place. That's where holistic health comes it. Holistic health is an approach to wellness that encompasses the whole person. We are more than what we eat. The holistic approach to wellness takes into account other aspects of life such as family, relationships, career, spiritual practices, finances, creativity, joy, social interaction and more.

Beyond Diet and Nutrition

We all know that kale is a nutrient dense food, full of antioxidants. However, all of the kale in the world will not compensate for a life full of stress and anxiety. Working out for an hour a day won't really be beneficial at all if you aren't able to get good quality sleep. There are so many factors beyond diet and exercise that contribute to overall health and well-being. Career, relationships, mind-set, spirituality, environment and community all play an integral role in overall health. Holistic health not only looks at all of these components beyond diet and nutrition, but also takes into account that every one is different. What works for one person, may not work for another. One person's healthy food choices could be another's poison.

Focus on Maintaining Health and Prevention

Holistic wellness focuses on maintaining optimal health and preventing illness and disease through lifestyle. Prioritizing overall health on a daily basis results in less medical intervention, creating a better quality of life, not to mention saving money on doctor bills.
