What is Holistic Health and Wellness Coaching

Updated: Jul 31

Holistic health coaching at its core is about empowerment. Holistic health coaches empower the individual to make the change or transformation they desire. A coach doesn't teach, but rather partners with the individual to help them become experts on themselves - their bodies, their minds and their spirits.

Most people know what changes they need to make to achieve their goals. They just need some guidance on how to get there. For example, a holistic health coach can help to bridge the gap between traditional health care systems and the patient. In a typical doctor's visit, the patient maybe spends 5 - 10 minutes speaking to the doctor before he/she makes recommendations, maybe prescribes medication and then moves on to the next patient. Health coaches help clients to implement the recommendations and support them on their path to health and wellness. Goals are client-driven, meaning that health coaches help clients to take control of their own wellness and advocate for their own health.

Why a health coach? Why not just "DIY" it?

All of the best athletes in the world didn't become the best athletes in world without the help of a good coach. Coaches are vital in helping people to optimize their own innate abilities. A coach provides a perspective that you often can't see yourself. Health coaches support their clients in discovering their own innate abilities to heal themselves and improve their health and well-being. Yes, you can make improvements to your health, change your habits, achieve goals without a health coach. But a good health coach will guide, support and ultimately will empower you to take your health and wellness to a whole new level.

Think of a health coach as a life coach, but with a focus on health and wellness. It's about balance and flow in life. Movement and nutrition are important, but are career, relationships, social life, family, finances and more. An imbalance in one area will affect all of the other areas of life. That's looking at health in a holistic way. Everything is connected.

Health coaches don't:

  • Make any kind of medical diagnosis

  • Implement drastic changes in diet and lifestyle

  • Tell you to follow a specific diet or take specific supplements

  • Order labs or tests

Health coaches do:

  • Empower clients to tap into their own innate knowledge of what they need to do to improve their health.

  • Understand "bio-individuality". Every person is different. What works for one person, may not work for others.

  • Create a space for the client to examine what's going on in their lives, and what is affecting their health - physically, mentally and spiritually. A healthy coach will help the client through making recommendations to address their health concerns.

  • Recommend small actionable steps that when combined with the whole can make transformational change happen.

  • Work as part of a health team that can include doctors, dietitians, and nutritionists.

There is so much confusing, and sometimes contradictory information on health and wellness. A health coach will empower individuals to take control of their own health and wellness. Through implementing small steps and providing accountability, support and guidance a holistic health coach will help clients to reach their goals and transform their health.
